Thika Women Microcredit Program - Thika, Kenya

Through the empowerment of micro-loans, AMF is working with a group of 25 women in the Thika community to establish a small farming co-op. These women are widows relying on casual work to support their families.
Implementing a micro-credit venture with this group is benefiting not only their immediate families but also the community as a whole.
The women work together on a shared piece of land to rear chickens, pigs, cows, and farm vegetables. These products provide food to the in-school food program at Ngungugu Primary (LINK), where many of their children and grandchildren attend. The project also is a source of income for the women, collectively selling products in the local market for an additional profit. This income helps improve the lives for them and their families who currently survive on less then $1 a day.

"Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. Give a woman microcredit, she, her husband, her children and her extended family will eat for a lifetime."
